We’re addicted to the new.
In 2015 popular media is so easy to consume that most of our conversations focus on the release date of new media rather than its influence and impact. Sorry to beat a dead horse, but the zeitgeist is more real than ever before.
That’s not a bad thing! (Not entirely anyway)
I love ‘the moment’ conversations. There’s a magic to water-cooler discussions and rampant twitter replies. Sometimes it’s just great to know that —whether everyone agrees or not— we’re part of a big community that’s in the process of sharing an experience.
That being said, sometimes games release at such a breakneck pace we’re moving past them before we’ve had a chance to say anything about them. This isn’t always true, and there’s an argument to be made that games criticism is better about maintaining the conversation than other avenues for artistic expression (i.e.: web-wide prolonged Game of the Year discussions generate far more conversation on the year’s best games than the Oscars do.) However, we’re nowhere near the century long back-and-forths that hover around seminal pieces of literature.
Part of that has to do with how relatively new video games are, but let’s not kid ourselves, we can do better.
So with all that said, we’re giving ourselves an excuse to play older games that already have already had their time in the limelight. Castle Couch is going to be tackling games on our personal bucket lists.
These are some of the games we’ll be looking at:
- Chrono Cross (1999)
- Metroid Prime 3 (2007)
- Demon’s Souls (2010)
- Planescape Torment (1999)
- Grim Fandango (1998)
- Dark Souls (2011)
- Crusader Kings 2 (2012)
- Metal Gear Solid 3 (2004)
- Link to the Past (1991)
- Super Mario RPG (1996)
- Xenoblade Chronicles (2012)
- Final Fantasy VII (1997)
The goal is to play one game every two months, and to put out dense essays on each of them. One thing you’ll notice is that we’ve each only picked four games and are looking to cover six each. Below we’ve each put together a list of other games from our bucket list we’d like to play and talk about, but we’re going to ask you gorgeous people at home to help us pick which other games on our list get played.
Also, we’ll be looking for interesting essays on every game we’ve mentioned so far. Get in touch with us if you’ve found any articles you think we should be reading.
We’re really excited about this project. There’s nothing quite like getting your hands on something truly special, and we’re hoping that will come across in our work.
Keep talking about games. They’re the best.
We need help! Which of these games should we add to our list?
